MEMBERS NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2011

Dear member,

Welcome to the January newsletter. I hope you all had a good Xmas and the SAMF committee wish you all a prosperous New Year.

Unfortunately I have to start with the very sad news of the death of one of our long serving members, Les Wilson. Les had been suffering ill health for a number of years but prior to this he was a committee member, but was more notably as the organiser of the National Sea League. His efforts in  running the Sea League was instrumental in it becoming the successful competition it now is. He was a very popular person, especially in the North West where he was a very active competition angler. The number of people who attended his funeral bears testament to this. He will be sorely missed and SAMF offers its condolences to his wife, Marion, family and friends.

There is a lot of information contained in this newsletter but the most important bit is that it is subs renewal time again. For those members whose membership runs through from last year i.e. new members who joined late in the year to fish the Masters, and Life members, I will have enclosed a 2011 membership card. Please note this means brand new members and not those who lapsed their membership for one year or more. The rest of members will need to send me a cheque for £20 made payable to SAMF and fill in the reply slip at the end of this newsletter. Those of you on line can also join via the website using paypal. Please don’t forget to do this because it costs time and money to send out reminders. I also need to know if you are a member of the Angling Trust which will reduce our insurance costs.

MASTERS 2010 – CHESIL

The following is the press release from the Masters 2010 at Chesil. Full results can be found on the website:

Welsh angler Joe Arch won the 2010 SAMF UK MASTERS on the beaches of Chesil in Dorset on the 23rd and 24th October.

94 anglers from England and Wales competed for the title and even though the weather conditions were variable i.e. strong onshore winds on Saturday and offshore winds on Sunday, conditions were good for both matches. As you would expect on Chesil there was a variety of species caught including 2 red mullet of 1lb 14oz and 1lb 8oz.

The venue did not fish as well as it can do but there were enough fish on both days for competitors to target. There were 14 different species caught, the main ones being dogfish, codling, whiting, pouting & pollock. On the first day competitors needed between 7 and 10 fish to come in the top four in their sections. Colin Carey from Worthing had the best overall catch with 7 fish for 10lb 3oz. mainly whiting and flatfish. The heaviest fish was a tremendous whiting of 3lb 2oz caught by Gary Strange from Clacton on Sea. Second heaviest fish was a Bass of 2lb 9oz caught by Mike Groves from Kingston Upon Thames

Day one zone positions:

A zone 1st       Darren Newland                     3lb 12oz.

A zone 2nd       Joe Arch                                  3lb 10oz.

D Zone 2nd      Dave Lane                               7lb 14oz

D Zone 3rd       Robert Tuck                            6lb 0oz

D Zone 4th       Tony Thomas                          5lb 8oz

ALL SAMF MATCHES ARE FISHED ON A CATCH AND RETURN FORMULA, THE FISH ARE MEASURED AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RETURNED. A CONVERSION CHART THEN CONVERTS THE LENGTH TO WEIGHT. TWO YEARS AGO SAMF INTRODUCED SIZE LIMITS IN THEIR MAJOR COMPETITIONS ON COD, WHITING AND BASS TO TRY AND ENCOURAGE MORE ANGLERS TO FISH MATCHES. AS A RESULT THIS REDUCED THE ACTUAL NUMBERS OF FISH COUNTING TO AN ANGLERS SCORE BUT GAVE EVERY ANGLER THE POSSIBILITY OF DOING WELL EVEN ON THE LAST CAST BY CATCHING A LARGE FISH.

Day 2 again saw good conditions and anglers needed 5 to 11 fish to score well. Top catch was made by Michael Groves from Kingston upon Thames with 7 fish for 5lb 9oz. The biggest fish was a codling of 2lb 5oz caught by Darren Phillips of Lee On Solent, 2nd heaviest fish was a mullet of 2lb 1oz caught by Stuart Dewhurst from Preston

AGM 2010

As usual the AGM took place during the weekend of the Masters and the following are the bullet points from the meeting:

  • MASTERS 2011 – We had previously accepted a proposal by Ian Bowell to have a spring time competition on Orford Island. Unfortunately Ian has had to pull out of organising this and Mark Sharman volunteered to take over, which was accepted. It is now to soon to have a spring competition so he is looking for it to be moved to November. Further details to follow soon.
  • To try and increase numbers entering the Masters we introduced, on a trial basis, a 2 tier entry system. There were no objections to this and it will continue for next year. As I pointed out at the meeting the numbers fishing the Masters had been boosted by 38 anglers and a large number of these were new members thus boosting our membership and putting us back into profit for the first time for a number of years. Most people were positive about this move but I had received a few complaints, and I believe we took some stick on angling forums, but these people do not fully understand the reasoning for these changes. We have to change with the times and if we had stuck with the old system we would have had the lowest membership and entry to the masters ever.

TREASURERS REPORT :–

The accounts show that SAMFs worth is £6575.57 which is a small increase of £38.15 from 2009. Also we have to bear in mind that this year we have had the Forces challenge for 2009 included in these accounts which took place just after the AGM last year. We have had to take some serious action to halt the decline such as reducing sponsorship etc. At one stage in the year it looked like we were going to make a large loss but the increase in membership for the Masters has brought us back on track. The running costs, such as postage, printing & stationary, telephone & broadband have remained at a similar level this year.

We are still in a relatively strong position and just need to continue being careful with expenditure. Sponsorship for the challenge matches will have to remain low this year but I am hoping to bring back the sponsorship for the pairs.

For this reason I propose that SAMF subscriptions remain at £20 for 2011.

BELGIUM & HOLLAND CHALLENGE MATCH 2010

A report by Darren Phillips:

The 2010 Challenge was held in Lymington on 2- 3 July.  This year the 15 man teams competed for the Alan Gilbert Memorial Cup, a fitting tribute to Alan an England International and regular member of the SAMF team.

Match 1 was competed at Milford Shingle Bank.  Weather conditions were ideal with light winds and sunshine.  A total of 81 fish were landed and consisted of Bream, Bass, Garfish, Mackerel, Pollack, Undulate Ray and Wrasse.  Top angler on the day was Ian Golds from SAMF who registered 6 fish for 171 points from zone B.  Heaviest fish was a Ballan Wrasse of 90 points landed by Darren Newlands at his first appearance in this event.  SAMF emerged as day winners with 269 points followed by Holland on 372 and Belgium with 407.

The second match took place at Pennington Sea Wall.  Bright sunshine and a strong North Westerly wind posed far from ideal conditions.  However, the teams landed 108 fish, mostly Bass but there were a few Bream along with a Golden Grey Mullet, a Flounder and a surprise Pipefish.  Top individual on day 2 was Dutchman Remi Lindhout who landed 6 fish for 90 points from zone C.  The heaviest fish was a Golden Grey Mullet caught by Rudi Jacobs from Belgium.  SAMF won the day with 318 points with Holland very close behind on 338 and Belgium with 380.

SAMF were overall winners on 587 points, Holland 2nd with 710 and Belgium 3rd with 787.  Mrs Jane Gilbert, the Guest of Honour presented the cup and medals to SAMF team member Mike Perfect one of Alans oldest friends and regular fishing partner.  The top individual over the 2 days was Ian Golds from SAMF who won a rod kindly donated by Anyfish Anywhere.  SAMF would like to thank the Stewards and the staff of the Elmers Court Hotel.  The next event will take place in Belgium 14- 16 October 2011.

NATIONAL SEA LEAGUE

A report by John Amery:

Worthing based match team Prime Angling showed their mettle on the North Norfolk beaches to win both days competitions and emerge as clear winners of the 2010 SAMF National Sea League Final, fished 27/28 November.

Arctic conditions met the competitors on Saturday morning, with snow on the beaches, heavy seas and a biting easterly wind. Conditions were difficult but just fishable.

These conditions meant that the whiting that had been present in numbers prior to the match were not there and competitors targeted dabs, which were to make up the bulk of the weekends catches.

Prime Angling led the way by securing a zone win, a second and 3 thirds for a total of only 12 points and their angler Colin Carey winning his zone and having the biggest catch of the day.

Zone Winners were:-

Steve Llewellyn          Tim Relf          Ray Christoforato       John Horsup    Colin Carey

Rhonda Valley            Zziplex            Garry Evans MT         Eagles              Prime Angling

Day 1 runners up were Garry Evans Match Team fromSouth Wales with Anglian team Eagles in 3rd place.

Day 2 saw an improvement in conditions and whilst still very cold and showery the sea had dropped off somewhat and catches improved. Day 1 had seen 221 fish caught, day 2 was to produce 614.

Prime Angling again led the way and won the day with a total of 19 points in front of Castaway Tackle with 29 points and Avenue Angling with 32 points.

Colin Carey was again the top angler

Zone Winners Day 2

Tony Thomas  Carl Porter       Lee Caley        Andrew Hutchins       Colin Carey

Nth Norfolk    Castaway        Castaway        Garry Evans MT         Prime Angling

Local organiser Tony Thomas had a very successful weekend, having a zone second on day 1 and winning his zone on day 2 to be 2nd individual.

League secretary John Amery picked out Tony for special mention at the prize presentation as Tony had arranged the headquarters and accommodation, had singularly pegged the beaches and had done all the results.

It was agreed at the AGM that 2011’s final will be fished at Eastbourne.

Anyone interested in fishing or organizing a league should contact John Amery on tel. 01995 61211, john-samf@ry-isp.co.uk.

DAIWA PAIRS

The Pairs continues to be well supported and this year is the 30th anniversary. Nick is guaranteeing a 1st prize of #3000 with a limit on entries to 144 anglers, more details from the Pairs website – www.irishpairs.co.uk

FORCES CHALLENGE

A report by Darren Phillips:

Hosted by the Police, the 2010 Challenge Match between the Sea Anglers Match Federation (SAMF), Combined Armed Forces (CAF), Fire and Police Services was fished at Llandudno and Talacre North Wales 16- 17 Nov.

Match 1 saw the 15 man teams competing on Llandudno Beach.  Species expected were Dogfish and Whiting.   A total of 451 fish were caught, measured and returned during the 5 hour match.  The majority of the fish were Whiting but also included Cod, Plaice and Dabs.  Surprisingly no Dogfish were caught and apparently this is unheard on the venue.  The top individual on Day 1 was Steve Sheehan representing the CAF who caught 26 fish from peg 60 in C zone for a total of 256 points (2.56 Kg).  SAMF narrowly won the first match with 316 points just 21 ahead of runners up CAF with 337.  The Police finished third with 453 and the Fire Service scored 490.

Day 2 saw the anglers head off to Talacre.  The weather had changed for the worse and they were greeted by strong Easterly wind with rain that saw the beach turn into a sand storm.  Although unpleasant the competitors battled on landing 1018 fish comprising of Whiting, Dabs and small Codling during the 4 hour match.   Julian Shambrook took the top place on the day for SAMF catching 38 fish worth 700 fish points (7Kg) from peg 60 in C Zone.  SAMF benefitted greatly from the experience of the 9 English and Welsh Internationals within the team to win the day with 211 points.  CAF were once again the runners up with 370.  The Police scored 421 and the Fire Service 573.

SAMF emerged as the overall winners with a total of 527 points, followed by CAF (707), Police (874) and the Fire Service (1063).  Top individual over the 2 days was England International Malcolm Stote from Lymington with a very impressive 7 points.  Kevin Green was the top angler for the Police with 21 points (6th).  Top CAF team member was Nathan Lankaster with 26 points (8th) and Gary Geoghegan led the way for the Fire Service with 28 points (11th).

INDIVIDUAL LEAGUE.

Despite a few leagues having been run the entry numbers to the final, which had been organized at Skegness, were very low there fore for the second year running we had to cancel the final. Because of this we have now decided to stop running this competition, and I would like to thank Eddie Painter for organizing the events over the past few years.

WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

This years club championships are being held in Belgium, a venue we know very well! Further details from John Amery, 01995 61211, john-samf@ry-isp.co.uk.
