2016 Masters press release:

DEVON ANGLER BEN BRADSTOCK WINS 2016 SAMF UK MASTERS AT CHESIL
Devon angler Ben Bradstock won the 2016 SAMF UK MASTERS at Cogden, Chesil in Dorset on the 28th and 29th October. Ben picked up the top prize of £950 in cash and two top of the range Anyfish Anywhere rods.
49 anglers from England, Wales and the Isle of Man competed for the title on Cogden, Chesil, where anglers were greeted with calm conditions on both days. This meant that there were plenty of fish to be caught, but decisions had to be made what species to target, with plaice, dogfish and a sprinkling of other species such as gurnard on the bottom, and plenty of garfish on the surface. Most competitors started bottom fishing early in the matches to take advantage of the tide flow but as this eased most change to surface fishing for Garfish. Small mackerel were a nuisance for those surface fishing with some competitors quite happy to fill their freezers for the coming winter!!!
On the first day competitors needed between 10 and 13 fish to come in the top three in their sections. Ben Bradstock from Honiton, Devon had the best overall catch with 13 fish for 12lb 13oz with a mixed bag of dogfish, plaice, garfish and a gurnard. Runner up on day 1 was Andrew Dugdale from the Isle of Man with 8 fish for 12lb 9oz with a bag of dogfish and plaice. Heaviest fish on day one was a dogfish of 2lb 3oz caught by Joe Arch from Cardiff, runner up heaviest fish was a tie with three fish of 2lb 1oz, two plaice caught by Andrew Dugdale and Ben Bradstock and a dogfish caught by Mark Pinder, from Ipswich.
The competition was divided in to 2 sections of 25 pegs, zone prizes were 1st £100, 2nd £60 and 3rd £35.
The zone positions on day 1 were:-
A zone 1st Ben Bradstock 12lb 13oz.
A zone 2nd Andrew Dugdale 12lb 9oz.
A zone 3rd Kerry Saint 9lb 7oz
B zone 1st Ralph Crosby 8lb 7oz.
B zone 2nd Joe Arch 7lb 12oz
B zone 3rd Lee Collins 7lb 11oz

ALL SAMF MATCHES ARE FISHED ON A CATCH AND RETURN FORMULA, THE FISH ARE MEASURED AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RETURNED. A CONVERSION CHART THEN CONVERTS THE LENGTH TO WEIGHT.

Day 2 saw even calmer condition with anglers still needing between 10 and 16 fish to score well. Top catch was made by Kenny McKoy from Sunderland with 10 fish for 14lb 10oz. Kenny concentrated on bottom fishing throughout the match catching some quality plaice, dogfish and a gurnard. Runner up on day 2 was Ben Bradstock with 16 fish for 8lb 15oz, mainly garfish and 2 dogfish.
Biggest fish on day two was a plaice of 2lb 13oz caught by Kenny McKoy second heaviest fish was also a plaice of 2lb 9oz caught by Mark Rogers from Maidstone.

Day 2 zone winners
A zone 1st Kenny McKoy 14lb 10oz
A zone 2nd Joe Arch 9lb 2oz
A Zone 3rd Henry Randell 7lb 13oz

A mystery pairs competition was run within the match and winners were:-
1 Kenny McKoy & Eddie Painter – £120
2 Joe Arch & Leno Fenech – £80
3 Dave Lane & Dave Macken – £40
Ben was overall champion with a perfect score of 2 zone wins giving him 2 points. He adapted well to changing conditions altering methods when things went quiet to keep catching. He worked hard, especially on the second day to catch 14 garfish.
Joe Arch ran him close also with a two zone 2nd places giving him 4 points.
Cash prizes down to 11th position overall and 2 extra prizes of donated rods took the list down to 13th place. SAMF UK Masters Results & Press Release

Masters Press release:
KENT ANGLER DAVID WOOD-BRIGNALL WINS 2015 SAMF UK MASTERS AT HYTHE
Local angler David Wood-Brignall won the 2015 SAMF UK MASTERS on the beaches of Hythe in Kent on the 29th and 30th October.
97 anglers from England, Wales and the Isle of Man competed for the title on Princes and Marine Parades, with near perfect conditions on Friday and calmer conditions on Saturday. This meant that there were plenty of fish caught on the first day with fewer on the second day. The main species caught were whiting codling, dabs & dogfish. There was also a sprinkling of what is meant to be summer species such as Bass, Sole, Plaice, Rays, Gurnard and Black Bream which kept the competitors on their toes because it was these bonus fish that were going to affect the results. On the first day competitors needed between 16 and 35 fish to come in the top two in their sections. Local angler David Wood-Brignall from Romney Marsh had the best overall catch with 21 fish for 19lb 4oz. There were two heaviest fish caught on day one, of equal weight, Thornback Rays of 6lb 1oz caught by Karl Nangle from Grimsby and Shane Russell from Old Conwy, North Wales.

The zone positions on day 1 were:-
A zone 1st Colin Crosby 13lb 7oz.
A zone 2nd Dave Cook 13lb 6oz.
A zone 3rd Saul Page 12lb 7oz

B zone 1st Jimmy Price 13lb 4oz.
B zone 2nd Julian Shambrook 13lb 2oz
B zone 3rd Mark Pinder 11lb 4oz

C Zone 1st Karl Nangle 14lb 4oz
C Zone 2nd Bill Harrison 12lb 5oz
C zone 3rd Richard Yates 11lb 0oz

D Zone 1st David Wood-Brignall 19lb 4oz
D Zone 2nd George Smith 18lb 8oz
D Zone 3rd Brett Bartramm 15lb 9oz

ALL SAMF MATCHES ARE FISHED ON A CATCH AND RETURN FORMULA, THE FISH ARE MEASURED AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RETURNED. A CONVERSION CHART THEN CONVERTS THE LENGTH TO WEIGHT. SEVERAL YEARS AGO SAMF INTRODUCED SIZE LIMITS IN THEIR MAJOR COMPETITIONS ON COD, WHITING AND BASS TO TRY AND ENCOURAGE MORE ANGLERS TO FISH MATCHES. AS A RESULT THIS REDUCED THE ACTUAL NUMBERS OF FISH COUNTING TO AN ANGLERS SCORE BUT GAVE EVERY ANGLER THE POSSIBILITY OF DOING WELL EVEN ON THE LAST CAST BY CATCHING A LARGE FISH.

Day 2 saw the wind and the sea had dropped making sizeable fish more difficult to catch but anglers still needed between 6 and 18 fish to score well. Top catch was made by Kirk Watson from Rainham, Kent with 18 fish for 10lb 1oz. The two biggest fish were a Cod of 4lb 8oz caught by Andrew Hutchings from Cardiff and a Dogfish of 2lb 12oz caught by Rob Bates from Canterbury.

Day 2 zone winners
A zone 1st Andrew Hutchings 5lb 8oz
A zone 2nd Joe Arch 5lb 0oz
A Zone 3rd George Smith 3lb 6oz

B zone 1st Marc Corlett 7lb 8oz
B zone 2nd David Wood-Brignall 3lb 7oz
B Zone 3rd Don Jenner 2lb 8oz

C Zone 1st Saul Page 6lb 7oz
C Zone 2nd Stuart Littlewood 4lb 9oz
C Zone 3rd Michael Rycroft 4lb 6oz

D Zone 1st Kirk Watson 10lb 1oz
D Zone 2nd Rob Bates 9lb 3oz
D Zone 3rd Bill Lindfield 7lb 6oz

FINAL POSITIONS

1 David Wood-Brignall 3 pts £1000
2 Saul Page 4 pts £750
3 George Smith 5 pts £500
4 Rob Bates 6 pts (1022 fish pts) £400
5 Juliaan Shambrook 6 pts (824 fish pts) £300
6 Karl Nangle 6 pts (801 fish pts) £200
7 Richard Yates 8 pts £150
8 Dave Cook 9 pts (942 fish pts) £100
9 Mark Pinder 9pts (711 fish pts) £100
10 Bill Lindfield 10pts £100
11 Craig Buy 11pts (848 fish pts) £50
12 Richard Burt 11pts (622 fish pts) £50
13 Stuart Littlewood 11pts (606 fish pts) £50
14 Darren Phillips 12pts (805 fish pts) £50
15 Colin Crosby 12pts (761 fish pts) £50

Three Ladies fished this year:
Nicole Conway – 53 points
Kimberley Lawn – 44 points
Ladies Champion was Heather Lindfield who successfully defended her title with 36 points.

A pairs competition was run within the match and winners were:-
1 Richard Yates (Dover) & Saul Page (Deal) – £200
2 Craig Buy (Colchester) & Richard Burt (Clacton) – £100
3 George Smith (Grimsby) & Gary Hutson (Cleethorpe) – £60

David, who was fishing his first SAMF Masters, was overall champion with a 1st place and a 2nd place in his zone giving him 3 points. On the first day his catch included a codling of 4lb 8oz and on the second day despite a slow start came through with a double shot of bass and 4 late whiting which saw him gain second zone place and the overall winner.

Saul Page ran him close also with a zone 3rd and a 1st giving him 4 points.
Cash prizes down to 15th position overall and section pools for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, plus the two heaviest fish each day, giving a total cash prize fund in excess of £6000, plus tackle prizes and trophies. SAMF is grateful in particular to our member Julian Shambrook of ANYFISH ANYWHERE who donated rods for the prize table. We are also grateful to Paul Fenech, another member, from SEA ANGLER MAGAZINE for also donating items for the prize table

Everyone who attended agreed that once again the event had been successful, and this venue will be used again for major events.
Next years final is scheduled to be fished in the South West in October/November. Qualifying matches are already being run around the country. Contact Andy Steele, 01772 611597, for details of local events and how to organise qualifiers.

MASTERS 2013 ISLE OF MAN PRESS RELEASE

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Masters '13 Andrew Dugdale (640x480)

LOCAL ANGLER ANDREW DUGDALE WINS 2013 SAMF UK MASTERS ON THE ISLE OF MAN.

Local angler Andrew Dugdale won the 2013 SAMF UK MASTERS held on the Isle of Man on the 29th and 30th November. Only 45 anglers, mainly from the Isle of Man but also including some from England and Wales, competed for the title. This is the first time the Masters has been fished on the Isle of Man which was seen as a reward for the loyalty by a number of members who have supported SAMF events over a long period of time. Unfortunately the competition broke several records for the wrong reasons. This is the first time that we have had to raffle a zone prize and the first time that anglers experiencing a blank on one day still finished in the top ten if they did well on the other day. However one record broken which was welcomed is a junior finishing in the top ten for the first time.

20 anglers out of 45 caught on day 1 and only 10 anglers caught on day 2.

Both matches were fished on the beach at Vollun but conditions were not good for both matches with offshore winds creating a flat clear sea. In the right conditions this beach can produce large catches of fish, mainly coalfish and coalfish were the main species caught during this event. On the first day only three anglers caught fish in zone A, in zone B there were seven anglers with one fish each and zone C fished better with 10 anglers catching fish. Andrew Dugdale won with 9 fish for 6lb 4oz. Andrew also had the biggest fish on day one with a bass of 1lb 9oz.

The zone positions on day 1 were:-

A zone 1st   George Duddale               4lb 3oz.

A zone 2nd    Steven Trish                   1lb 3oz.

B zone 1st     Mark Quirk                          12oz.

B zone 2nd     Mike Hughes/Ben Richards     9oz

C zone 1st     Andrew Dugdale              6lb 4oz

C zone 2nd       Andy Young                     6lb 0oz

ALL SAMF MATCHES ARE FISHED ON A CATCH AND RETURN FORMULA, THE FISH ARE MEASURED AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RETURNED. A CONVERSION CHART THEN CONVERTS THE LENGTH TO WEIGHT WHICH GIVES EVERY ANGLER THE POSSIBILITY OF DOING WELL EVEN ON THE LAST CAST BY CATCHING A LARGE FISH.

Day 2 conditions were even worse, with only 2 fish caught in zone A and 1 fish caught in zone B. Zone C was slightly better with 7 anglers catching 10 fish between them. The day winner out of zone C was Bill Harrison, also from the Isle of Man, who caught 3 fish for 3lb 4oz including the joint heaviest fish a bass of 2lb 1oz. This was shared with Dave Shorthouse from Stafford who also caught a bass of 3lb 4oz.

Day 2 zone winners

A zone 1st   Jack Kissack                                   6oz

A zone 2nd   Andrew Dugdale                    2oz

B zone 1st     Andy Steele                           6oz

C zone 1st        Bill Harrison                   3lb 4oz

C zone 2nd    Dave Shorthouse             2lb 1oz

FINAL POSITIONS

1        Andrew Dugdale              3 pts

2        Mark Quirk                     6 pts

3        Dave Shorthouse             9 pts

4        Jack Kissack                             10 pts

5        Steve Quilliam                13 pts

6        George Dugdale               17 pts          (156 fish pts)

7        Bill Harrison                    17 pts          (156 fish pts)

8        Andy Steele                   17 pts          (20 fish pts)

9        Andy Young                     18 pts (288 fish pts)

10      Steve Trish                    18 pts (59 fish pts)

He caught 2 fish on day one to finish 9th in the zone and won his zone on day 2 with a whiting, only one of two fish caught in zone A.

Masters '13 Jack Kissack (640x480)

There was just one lady fishing this year, Ann Horobin from Lancaster. She caught 4 fish on day 1 and finished a creditable 21st overall.
