This years challenge match was hosted by SAMF on the shingle beaches at Kelling in North Norfolk on the 5th & 6th of December. Competing was in 3 zones of 20 each team having 5 anglers per zone and fishing on a level playing field using only the bait provided which was 50 blow lug, x 1 wrap of blacks and 1 mackerel each day.

The first match was held from 15:30 till 20:00 hrs fishing over high water and for most the fishing was hectic, but hampered by strong north westerly winds, a little weed and strong tide making conditions difficult for all, however 1392 fish were caught  measured and returned by 60 anglers over the 3 zones and the hectic sport made for a great day 1 competition.

Day 1 Team Results:

1st   SAMF                                         316 pts. –  5105 fish pts.
2nd Combined Armed Services   438 pts. – 4677 fish pts.
3rd  Fire Service                              522 pts. –  4134 fish pts.
4th  Police Service                           554 pts. – 3800 fish pts.

Day 2 came and everyone was keen and eager to get on the beach for the 10am start sea conditions had calmed with bright sunshine and a slight chill in the air, this made fishing considerably harder with the previous nights hordes of whiting disappearing we were left to scratch out dabs and flounders, different day and different tactics, some went an hour or more before finding a fish where others had a few in the first hour and then nothing until last hour, in stark contrast only 338 fish were caught and returned.

Day 2 Team Results:

1st   SAMF                                         288 pts. – 1341 fish pts.
2nd Police Service                           473 pts. – 912 fish pts.
3rd  Fire Service                              479 pts. –  904 fish pts.
4th  Combined Armed Services   588 pts. – 727 fish pts.

All that remained was the evening meal and the final presentation this year held at Kelling Heath Holiday Park who we would like to thank for their hospitality.

Thank you to SAMF Team captain Malcolm Stote who hosted the presentation and SAMF Competitions manager Andrew Dawkins who presented the prizes to all competitors.

Thank you  to Dene Conway this years local organiser and Rite Gear Angling Centre for bait supply and prizes and all who donated raffle prizes.

Thanks must also go to Tony Thomas for assisting with the results each evening and Norfolk Angling Club for use of the venue and Paul Rickard Secretary for his photography throughout the event.

The annual Alan Gilbert Memorial Challenge Match contested by UK Sea Anglers Match Federation, Belgium and Holland took place 8- 29 June.  Each team comprised of 15 anglers.  The event was pegged and fished on a measure to weight conversion system with all fish returned.  This year the venue was Chesil Beach in Dorset.

Day 1 saw the teams at Ferrybridge (Masonic) fishing from 1800 2200.  The 4 hour match saw a toal of 272 fished measured and returned.  Species caught included Smoothounds, Dogfish, Gurnards, Pout and Poor Cod.  Top angler on the day was Saul Page from Deal representing SAMF from peg 1 who landed 17 fish for 972 points (9.720kg).  SAMF emerged victorious on the day with 310 points narrowly beating Holland with 213.  Belgium finished 3rd on 419.

Day 2 was held at Cogden 1100- 1500.  On arrival the annual algae bloom could be seen in abundance and all thoughts of decent catches soon dissapeared.  In the end the competitors managed to capture 34 fish to 21 anglers.  Top angler on day 2 was Chris Snow from Worthing representing SAMF who landed a Small Eyed ray worth 290 points (2.900kg) from peg 35 in front of the car park.  Other species caught included Dogfish, Plaice, Bass and Flounder.  SAMF once again scored the lowest points on the day finishing with 325 points.  Holland were 2nd with 351 and Belgium finished the day with 358 points.

Overall SAMF retained the Alan Gilbert Memorial Cup for another year finishing with 635 points narrowly ahead of the Dutch who finished on 674 points.  Belgium finished 3rd with a total of 777 points.  Top individual angler was Saul Page finsihing with a well deserved 6 points over the 2 days.  Top Dutch angler was Kees Rijnhout in 3rd position overall with 13 points.  Top Belgian angler was team captain Joeri Devisch finishing 4th with 17 points.

SAMF would like to thank Allans Marine for supplying some top quality bait for the weekend,  Anyfish Anywhere for kindly donating the prizes and too those SAMF members who not only represented the federation during the event but pegged the beaches.  We would also like to extend our thanks to Dutch and Belgium teams whose friendship and spriited competitiveness makes this event so worthwhile and fitting a tribute to Alan.
